The Belgrade Zoo was founded in the year 1936. The Zoo is located in a part of the Belgrade fortress, on Kalemegdan, the most significant cultural-historical monument of Belgrade. The fortress was built by the Romans on Celtic excavations, and destroyed and reconstructed by the Huns, Serbs, Hungarians, Turks and all other folks which were scrambling for our capital. With the time, the Belgrade fortress was slowly changing into a museum and park with promenades, and among its walls different institutions are located, among which also the Zoo.
