Trajan and his famous architect Apollodorus of Damascus started restoration of the old fortifications dating from 89 and 99 A.D. The final part was a construction of the road in the Lower Gorge completed in 100 A. D, the canal built in 101 A. D. and famous and magnificent bridge across the Danube built from 103 -105 A. D. It had twenty arches supported by twenty strong pillars, some of which still could be seen when the level of the Danube is low. The length of the bridge, together with the portals, was 1133,90 m, while the part across the riverbed had the length of 1071 m.
Auxiliary camps, Pontes on the right and Dobreta (Romania) on the left coast of the Danube, were constructed simultaneously with the bridge.
The bridge, however, was destroyed in the 3rd century by the tribes.
